A college student from Pennsylvania died in a skiing accident on Mount Washington after falling nearly 600 feet.

PENNSYLVANIA — A college student from Pennsylvania died in a New Hampshire skiing accident after falling nearly 600 feet down a ravine on Mount Washington, according to sources.

Officials said Madison Saltsburg, 20, suffered fatal traumatic injuries during the fall. Rescuers worked to evacuate her off the mountain. Saltsburg and her skiing companion faced "hard, icy snow surfaces, open crevasse holes, and unforgiving conditions for a slip and fall," the U.S. Forest Service said in a news release.

Saltsburg, a graduate of Northern High School in York County, according to PennLive.com, was a junior at the University of Vermont.
