MCCC, SJU Pen Dual Admissions Transfer Agreement

Officials from Montgomery County Community College and Saint Joseph’s University signed a dual admissions transfer agreement during a ceremony on Oct. 23. The agreement encourages and facilitates the transfer of MCCC graduates to SJU to complete their baccalaureate degrees.
Under the agreement, MCCC students who graduate with associate’s degrees in business administration, computer science, physical science, education in the early years, middle years education, mathematics, music, social sciences, and theatre arts, are guaranteed admission with junior status at SJU, provided they meet admissions requirements.
Of particular note, students who transfer under this agreement are eligible for significant financial scholarships based on their academic performance. Scholarships range from $6,000 to $12,000 per year, depending on a student’s cumulative grade point average.
SJU will also offer an additional $2,000 per year in scholarships for members of Phi Theta Kappa, the international honors society for two-year colleges. SJU is one of only 283 institutions in the country to have a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the oldest American honors society for the arts and sciences.
“We’re working to open up our students’ thinking about where they transfer – to look beyond what they ever thought was possible when they enrolled at a community college, and to consider selective institutions like Saint Joseph’s University,” said Dr. Karen A. Stout, president of MCCC.
“We are especially excited about the connection between Phi Theta Kappa and Phi Beta Kappa, as the additional scholarship money gives our Phi Theta Kappa students an incentive to join and be involved,” she continued.
 “This is a historic day – not only for our institutions, but for our communities as well,” said Father C. Kevin Gillespie, president of SJU. “A good community cultivates competence, and this agreement is a blending of educators trying to make an impact on careers, yes, but ultimately trying to make an impact on the larger society.”
According to Stout, MCCC students have shown a growing interest in SJU over the past three years. Thirty MCCC students have applied to SJU during that time, 40 percent of which occurred in the last year alone. Top SJU programs of interest for MCCC students include biology, marketing, food marketing, psychology, education and accounting.
