3-Vehicle Crash Injures Driver, Spills Diesel on Lancaster Ave.

(Update 5:35 p.m.) Only one of Route 30’s two westbound lanes remains closed for cleanup work, according to Lower Merion Public Information Officer Tom Walsh.

Very minor injuries were reported for all three drivers, Walsh said, and the driver of the trash truck suffered a medical problem and was taken to a nearby hospital.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

(Update 4:55 p.m.) Township crews were able to contain the diesel that spilled into the sewer system following the trash truck's crash, according to Lower Merion Deputy Fire Marshal Jim McCoy. The spillage was contained to one block, at Rittenhouse Place and Walnut.

The SEPTA bus and minivan have been cleared and a tow truck is in the process of towing the trash truck.

The road is expected to be cleared within 15 minutes, McCoy said.

(Update 3:54 p.m.) Crews are working to clean up 25 to 30 gallons of diesel fuel—some of which has seeped into the sewer system—that spilled from the trash truck involved in the accident, according to Lower Merion Deputy Fire Marshal Jim McCoy.

Other crews are working on Rittenhouse Place and Athens Avenue to get ahead of the spill, McCoy said. A third-party cleaner will also come in to vacuum out spillage.

The driver of the trash truck was transported to the hospital; the passenger in the trash truck was checked on scene and was taken to the hospital with minor aches and pains. The driver of the minivan was unharmed. No further information on injuries was immediately available.

Officials are also waiting on PECO crews to arrive to address live wires on a lightpost that fell during the crash, according to McCoy.

The trash truck was heading east on Lancaster Avenue before the crash; the SEPTA bus was heading west, with the minivan following.
