Photos: Local Seniors Celebrate Start of Olympic Games

Egg races, wheelchair ball and bean bag throws may not be included in London's Olympic lineup, but for the next two weeks, Lower Merion seniors will go for the gold in these and other events as part of 's Senior Games.

On Thursday, the Center for Positive Aging in Lower Merion hosted an Olympics opening party that also kicked off the PALM Senior Games, which will include checkers, a walker and ball kick, and Olympic computer trivia in addition to the above events.

Thursday's celebration began with a Presentation of Colors by the Leon Spencer Reid American Legion Post 547, followed by patriotic songs by Merrie Notes—the PALM Center's musical group—and a Parade of Nations celebrating the ethnic heritage of Lower Merion seniors.

Age doesn't have to mean inactivity, a message PALM Board of Directors President Sherry Altschuler shared in a welcome message.

"Aging is a process, it’s not a disease," she said. "... We can’t control every [aspect of our environment] but we can certainly take care of our diet, we can do physical activity, we can make ourselves socially and community involved.  At PALM, we focus on every one of these issues."

To the community's "awesome, active adults," PALM Interim Executive Director Sandi Stoval reiterated Altschuler's message, saying, finally, "Let the games begin!”
