Baldwin To Celebrate Life Of Legendary Coach Ed Helbig

Ed Helbig, the late Baldwin High School track coach, will be remembered by the community this weekend.

BALDWIN, PA — The Baldwin-Whitehall community this weekend will celebrate the life of legendary Baldwin High School coach Ed Helbig, who led the track teams for 49 years.

Helbig died in August at 72 after battling cancer.

The celebration will occur Saturday from 5:30 p.m.-7:30 p..m. at the Baldwin High School Stadium.

Planned activities include sharing moments and memories as a tribute to Helbig; dedicating the Baldwin track in his name; and a ceremonial sunset lap with luminary candles lighting the track.

The event will also have commemorative T-shirts and Helbig's Eat 'n Park cookies in Fighting Highlander purple and white.

Helbig was head coach fof the track team for 30 years and was an assistant coach for 19 years prior to that. His coaching acumen resulted in two WPIAL championships, five WPIAL runner-ups, 38 section championships, 75 individual WPIAL champions and 15 individual PIAA champions.

In February, he was inducted into the Baldwin Sports Hall of Fame.
