Pittsburgh To Study Merger With Baldwin, Other Municipalities
Pittsburgh officials want to examine the possibility of absorbing adjacent suburban communities.
BALDWIN, PA — Although a proposed absorption of Wilkinsburg appears to be doomed for now, Pittsburgh city council will study mergers with other neighboring municipalities and their school districts - including Baldwin.
Council president Theresa Kail-Smith has introduced a resolution calling for the city to investigate whether an annexation, merger or consolidation with any of the bordering municipalities would be in city residents' best interests. Any merger would require additional legislative and legal moves beyond the study.
City council on Wednesday delayed a vote until on a controversial potential merger with Wilkinsburg that has caused strife in both the city and the borough. Council likely will vote against making the move immediately while further studying the issue.
