Police Warn of Scam
Two men posing as water utility workers tried to enter a Green Tree home last week.

Police are warning Pittsburgh-area residents of a scam involving two men posing as water utility workers in order to steal from homeowners.
Green Tree Borough police said that two men asked to “check the water pressure” inside of a home on Nov. 16, but they immediately left when the resident asked them to leave and called police.
Here's how the scam works: Two men acting as water utility contractors say that they need to come inside to check a home's water pressure in the faucets. While inside, one man walks around with the homeowner while the other person is free to rummage through the home.

“While you are with the one, the other goes through your rooms and belongings, taking valuables,” police said in a warning. “This (theft) is not discovered until well after the actors have gone.”
Police said that water employees typically wear uniforms and must carry a company photo ID. Police said that the worker also should have a handheld device used to read the meters.
