SCHEDULE/PREVIEW: Brentwood Boro July 3-4 Celebration

Tiny Brentwood Borough will see a population boom for at least two days next week, as guests and residents from in and around Pittsburgh's South Hills area will descend on the community of about 9,000 residents for an Independence Day celebration.

The festivities—put together annually by Brentwood community leaders and volunteers—have grown into a can't-miss attraction for many Pittsburghers, and John Frombach, chair of the Brentwood 4th of July Committee, says that 2012 will be no different.

Frombach says that the borough's Fourth of July parade alone (along Brownsville Road) draws more than 40,000 spectators each year from all over the South Hills.

Here is this year's schedule:

TUESDAY, JULY 3

6-8 p.m.: BRENTWOOD STREET FAIR (Along Brownsville Road from the Brentwood Library to the Brentwood Presbyterian Church, sponsored by the Brentwood Business Owners Association)

The street fair includes food booths, music, activities for children at the library's "Battle of the Barrel" and more.

At the Brentwood Municipal Building, come cheer on local fire companies as they compete against one another.

WEDNESDAY, JULY 4 (UPDATE: Brownsville Road from Maytide Street to Route 51 will be closed on July 4 from approximately 8 a.m.-1 p.m.)

8:30 a.m.: COLOR CEREMONY at Brentwood Stadium (Sponsored by Brentwood VFW Post 1810)

9 a.m.: 29TH ANNUAL BRENTWOOD FIRECRACKER 5K RACE (Race begins at Brentwood Towne Square adjacent to Brownsville Road.) CLICK HERE FOR RACE REGISTRATION DETAILS. Don't get left out!

10 a.m.: FLYOVER (Donated by area military veterans.)

10 a.m.: PARADE [Route (about 1.6 miles): Starts at the intersection of Brownsville Road and Sankey Avenue and proceeds south on Brownsville Road toward Brentwood Towne Square, where it ends.]

The parade will have two grand marshals this year. One is a group—Girl Scouts of the USA—being honored for 100 years of existence, and the other is WPXI news co-anchor Darieth Chisolm. Chisolm owns the Fullbody Fitness Club in Brentwood.

The theme of the parade this year, in honor of the Girl Scouts, is "100 Years of Proudly Serving Our Communities."

Says Frombach, "We hope to have more than 100 current and former Girl Scouts from the South Hills in the parade."

All in all, there will be more than 100 groups represented in the parade this year, including the Brentwood High School SPARTAN Marching Band, Baldwin High School Highlander Marching Band, Steel City Ghostbusters, Steel City Angels, several Syria Shriners groups and many others.

6:30 p.m.-9:15 p.m.: MUSIC IN THE PARK at Brentwood Stadium (The band Alter Ego performs from 6:30-7:45, and the Allegheny Brass Band performs from 8-9:15.)

9:15 p.m.: WELCOME at Brentwood Stadium (Brentwood Mayor Kenneth Lockhart)

9:20 p.m.: RAFFLE TICKET DRAWING AND HOUSE DECORATING CONTEST AWARDS

9:35 p.m.: RETIRING OF THE COLORS at Brentwood Stadium (Presented by Brentwood VFW Post 1810)

9:40 p.m. FIREWORKS DISPLAY at Brentwood Stadium

The rain date for the fireworks is Thursday, July 5.
