BENSALEM TOWNSHIP, PA — It's time to "clear the shelters."

The Women’s Animal Center will join animal shelters across the nation to ‘Clear the Shelters’ at the center on 3839 Richlieu Road in Bensalem from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.

America’s First Animal Shelter will participate in the 11th Annual NBC Universal "Clear the Shelters" nationwide pet adoption event, which helps find loving forever homes for surrendered and stray animals.

Inspire Federal Credit Union is serving as this year’s event partner, making adoption fees for cats, dogs, and small animals free for individuals and families adopting from the Women’s Animal Center.

The event will also feature complimentary refreshments, giveaways for adopters, and coloring activities for children. All shelter pets adopted from Women’s Animal Center are spayed or neutered, receive preventative and lifesaving vaccines, and are microchipped, which provides a permanent means of identification should a pet become separated from its new family.

Adopters will also receive 20 percent off in the Veterinary Hospital for their pet’s first annual physical exam.

“Inspire Federal Credit Union is incredibly proud to support such a worthwhile initiative, “said Jim Merrill, president and chief executive officer of the Bucks County-based credit union. “The role the shelter plays in our local community is transformative, and the positive impact pet adoptions have on families is powerful. Contributing our resources to finding good homes for these pets is truly rewarding.”

For potential adopters wanting to welcome a pet into their homes, these questions should be addressed:

  • Know what you’re looking for in a pet. Do you want a four-legged friend to join you on your daily run or a pet who is going to take on more of a roommate role, such as a senior pet? It’s important to know what your expectations are for your new pet.
  • Think about how a pet fits into your lifestyle. Do you work long hours or regularly travel? No matter the type of pet, you’ll need to be able to care for them and meet their needs, so knowing whether you can do that consistently is important.
  • Ask yourself if you can afford it. The costs for a pet don’t stop after adoption. You will need to be prepared to pay for food, visits to the veterinarian, and accessories like collars, beds and toys. So, knowing up front what to expect throughout the lifetime of your pet will help you make a better-informed decision.
  • You’ll need to consider things like whether your current housing will allow you to have a pet and if you or anyone who lives in your household has allergies.
