Lehigh University Hosts Webinar on Promoting Equity for Multilingual Learners with Disabilities

Featuring Dr. Sara E.N. Kangas

Lehigh University College of Education invites educators, policymakers, and the public to a webinar titled Promoting Equity for Multilingual Learners with Disabilities on Thursday, November 13, 2025, from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. EST. The event will feature Dr. Sara E.N. Kangas, associate professor and author of the new book Promoting Equity for Multilingual Learners with Disabilities (Teachers College Press, 2025).

In this webinar, Dr. Kangas will discuss the predictable and recurring barriers, which she calls patterned inequities, that multilingual learners with disabilities encounter in the education system. She will draw from her research and experiences to offer a framework for teachers, education leaders, and policymakers to act as agents of change, dismantling these barriers and protecting students’ educational rights.

The conversation will be moderated by Dr. Hayley Weddle, an assistant professor of educational foundations at the University of Pittsburgh, whose research focuses on equity in educational policy implementation. The webinar will end with time for questions and discussion, giving attendees a chance to engage with Dr. Kangas and Dr. Weddle on this important topic.

Dr. Kangas’ research emphasizes how systemic inequalities in K–12 education impact multilingual learners with disabilities, a vulnerable and quickly growing student group. Her book questions long-held assumptions and urges educators and policymakers to work together to create inclusive and fair learning environments.
