Canon-Mac Graduate Files Suit Against District

Caya Kubiak filed suit in Washington County Court on Thursday.

A graduate sued the district in Washington County Court Thursday—claiming that officials there failed to “protect her from the 2005 sexual advances of an assistant softball coach that led to them having a sexual relationship.”

The Observer-Reporter said that Cayla Kubiak is seeking $50,000 in damages and names a former superintendent, two softball coaches and a high school administrator in the suit.

In the woman’s lawsuit, she claims the district should have known about the sexual assaults in 2006 and reported them to police, and said the district “‘merely performed a cursory investigation’ into the assaults and failed to contact her parents while knowing (assistant softball coach Justin Bedilion) posed a danger to children.”

Online court records show that Bedilion, who was in his 20s during the time of the incidents, pleaded guilty in Washington County Court to aggravated indecent assault, corruption of minors and statutory sexual assault in 2008.

He had been charged by North Strabane Township police in 2006.

Kubiak's attorney, Matthew Keranko, could not immediately be reached for comment.

Substitute Superintendent Michael Daniels said Saturday that the district could not offer comment because it had not been notified of the suit.
