Canonsburg to Vote on Garbage Billing Change

Councilman Rich Russo said that could help with collection of delinquent bills.

Canonsburg Councilman Rich Russo on Monday night asked council to consider a six-word change to an existing ordinance governing garbage collection -- a tweak he said would help improve bill collection.

Russo had explained that the majority of delinquent payments for garbage collection are associated with renters and that the current ordinance permits billing to either landlords or tenants.

Borough Manager Terry Hazlett said Tuesday that council is expected to vote to amend the ordinance so that landlords would exclusively receive quarterly bills.

"One of the advantages of that is that we will be able to lien property," he said, adding that collecting fees from tenants can be difficult because they come and go, often not leaving a forwarding address when they move.

Council's voting meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Monday in the borough building.
