Obituary: Edward A. Straka, Who Served the U.S. Navy in WWII

July 4, 1925 - Aug. 16, 2012

Edward A. Straka, 87, of , died Thursday, Aug. 16, 2012 in Paramount Senior Living.

He was born July 4, 1925 in Canonsburg, a son of the late Andrew and Bertha Kendra Straka.

Edward worked for Continental Can Co. in West Mifflin for 38 years and as a bartender at for 25 years.

Edward served his county with the U.S. Navy during WWII in the Hawaiian Islands and Pensacola, Fla. He was awarded the Pacific Theater Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon and Victory Medal.

He was a lifetime Canonsburg resident and member of Saint Paul’s Lutheran Church, the American Legion and the Polish National Union.

On Sept. 25, 1949, he married Irene G. Zanakis Straka, who died Jan. 2, 2006.

Edward will be remembered as a loving father devoted to his family, with a quiet strength and strong faith. He enjoyed hunting with his sons and traveling to visit his grandchildren. He was always there for his family.

Surviving are three sons, John E. Straka of McMurray, Edward S. Straka of Haysville, Kansas, and Randall E. Straka of Tucson, Ariz. Also surviving is one sister, Anna Mae Kostelich and one brother, Andrew Straka Jr.—both of Canonsburg. He is also survived by five grandchildren: Tara Straka Galano of New York, N.Y., DAndra Kisler of Haysville, Kansas, Hunter and Luke Straka, both of Tucson, Ariz., and Britta Meir of Chicago.

Also deceased is one brother, Glenn Straka.

Friends will be received from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday and Monday and 9:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. Tuesday at the located at 30 E. College St. in Canonsburg.

Funeral service is 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Saint Paul Lutheran Church located at 201 N. Jefferson Ave. in Canonsburg with Vicar Richard T. Egtvedt officiating.

Burial with full military rites will be accorded by American Legion Post 902 and VFW Post 191 in Oak Spring Cemetery in Canonsburg will follow.
