Local athletes shine at 2025 PA State Elks Soccer Shoot (publicopiniononline.com) β Young athletes connected to the Chambersburg Elks Lodge No. 600 turned in strong performances at the 2025 PA State Elks Soccer Shoot, including Chambersburgβs own Jaeda Mosquera placing third in the U-10 girls division. Several nearby Franklin and Fulton County kids also medaled, and locals are invited to join future Elks Soccer or Hoop Shoots by contacting the listed organizer.

2. Applications open for Franklin County youth leadership program (publicopiniononline.com) β Franklin County ninth-graders can now apply for the 2026β27 Leadership Franklin County Youth program, run by the Greater Chambersburg Chamber Foundation and Wilson College. The free, 10βmonth course builds leadership, career, and community awareness skills, with applications due Feb. 3, 2026 and an optional Zoom info session on Jan. 6.

3. Teresa K. Hemler 1957-2025 (fcfreepresspa.com) β A longtime area resident who was born in Chambersburg and graduated from Chambersburg Area Senior High School has passed away at 68. Teresa βTessβ Hemler, most recently of Fayetteville, is remembered by her close family and for her love of reading, yard work, and all things paranormal. Services will be private at the familyβs convenience.

4. Dorothy M. 'Dot' (Benchoff) Martin 1938-2025 (fcfreepresspa.com) β An 87-year-old Waynesboro resident has died at Brookview Healthcare Center in Chambersburg, where she had been receiving care. Dorothy βDotβ Martin is remembered as a devoted homemaker, wife, mother, and grandmother, with private services planned and memorial contributions suggested to the Antietam Humane Society.

5. Gerald Lester Buchanan Sr. 1962-2025 (fcfreepresspa.com) β Family and friends are mourning Gerald Lester Buchanan Sr., who was born in Chambersburg and later lived in Greencastle. The 63βyearβold painter, outdoorsman, and devoted grandfather died December 6, with visitation and a memorial service planned Saturday at Fries Funeral Home in Mercersburg.
