Census Shows Bridgeville Lagging in Population Growth, Household Income

Bridgeville’s population remains stable but is lagging in growth and household income compared to Allegheny County and Pennsylvania, according to a 2011 U.S. Census estimate released this month.

The population is estimated to have increased slightly to 5,158 residents in 2011, which is an increase of 0.2 percent over the official 2010 Census figures. That is slightly less than the 0.3 percent population increase in both Allegheny County and Pennsylvania from April 1, 2010 to July 1, 2011.

The median household income also lags behind the state with the average estimate in Bridgeville to be $33,477. That compares to the state average of $51,651 and Allegheny County’s average of $49,805.

Bridgeville’s 62 percent homeownership rate is about 9 percentage points lower than the state. However, the borough’s poverty rate is 10.2 percent, which is 2.4 percent lower than the state average.

According to the Census, the borough’s racial make-up is 92.2 percent white, 4.2 percent black and 1.2 percent Asian and 1.1 percent Latino. Close to 2 percent of the population identifies itself as two or more races.
