Lack of Space Could Cut Library Events

Scott Library workers are concerned about where they'll be able to hold their children's programs.

is scrambling to find a new place to hold its children programs after workers were told they no longer can use the commissioners’ meeting room.

They’ve been told they now can instead use a 20-by-14 room, which is about one-third the size of the meeting room, that was previously used to store tax records. If they can’t find a larger room, library workers say they’ll have to eliminate programs for lack of space.

Janet Forton, the library’s director, sent out an e-mail Monday afternoon urging people in the community to show up for Tuesday night’s commissioners voting meeting and speak on behalf of the library. There is currently an item on the agenda to approve building renovations for the library.

“If a bigger room is not created or made available children’s (programming) will no longer be held,” Forton wrote in the e-mail.

Scott Township officials could not be reached for comment on why the library will no longer be allowed to use the meeting room. The e-mail indicates schedule conflicts and its messy condition after some of the events might be factors in the decision.

“People do not understand how many programs we put on a month and how many people come to the programs and the space required to do these programs,” Forton wrote. And the preparation to set up for the programs.”

Some of the more than 50 programs that will be cut are summer reading and book bingo among others.
