Winter Weather Driving Tips

PennDOT offers 10 tips as we prepare for our first snowstorm of the winter season.

Driving conditions could become treacherous overnight as the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh calls for at least an inch of snow in the region.

The region is under a winter weather advisory as heavy rain is expected to turn into snow late Tuesday night into early Wednesday morning.

  • Turn on your headlights
  • Use wipers and defroster
  • Check your vehicle’s fluid levels, tires and wipers before traveling
  • Increase your following distance
  • Slow down gradually and drive at a speed that suits the conditions
  • Falling temperatures may cause ramps and bridges to freeze before the road surface. Use caution when entering and exiting roadways
  • Keep windows and mirrors free of snow and ice
  • Be patient and allow extra time for your commute
