DORMONT, PA — The borough and Pittsburgh Regional Transit are jointly seeking a third party to turn two parking lots along the red Line into a mixed-use, mixed-income community to benefit the community and increase transit ridership.

The transit agency is encouraging developers to submit their qualifications and ideas for the 2.5-acre property next to Dormont Junction by May 26. Approximately 100,000 riders use Dormont Junction annually.

"This development is extremely important to Dormont," said Council President Jen Mazzocco. "Not only will it bring new residents who will ride the Red Line and 41 bus route, but it will also help us redevelop the West Liberty Avenue corridor, with new small businesses and a people-centered streetscape."

The project would also provide the transit agency with new revenue via developer lease payments.

Last year, the transit agency obtained a $500,000 federal grant to renovate the nearly 30-year-old Dormont Junction light rail station. The station will be reconstructed, with the station canopy being replaced. Also being added are pedestrian amenities, safety features, landscaping, bicycle racks and more.
