Dormont's Castle Playground Likely Doomed

The deteriorating Castle Playground needs to be replaced, a study shows.

(Dormont Borough)

DORMONT, PA — Castle Playground likely will come tumbling down in the near future. A consultant's recommendation is to raze the 31-year-old playground because of safety reasons.

Borough council likely will decide the playground's fate at its Monday meeting.

According to an evaluation performed by Pashek MTR, a North Side landscape architecture, community planning and design firm, Castle needs to be replaced.

"It is noted that the wood is very weathered and splintering in many areas. These areas can cause injury due to large splinters, entanglement, and impalement," the study states.

A tribute to Castle will occur this weekend courtesy of the Dormont comprehensive plan consultants from rePLACE. The event will be held Oct. 27 from 5 p.m.-6:30 p.m. in the Dormont Pool parking lot.

Borough officials say the tribute is an opportunity for the community to gather and share memories of the playground, as well discuss ideas for the future playground and Dormont parks. The borough recently was forced to close all three of its playgrounds for safety reasons.
