Letter to the Editor: Deasy Speaks Out Against T-Line Cuts

State Rep. Dan Deasy shares his thoughts about cutting the Kelton stop in Dormont.

In light of the recent Port Authority announcement to cut T-Line service, which would impact the community of Dormont as well as neighboring communities with the elimination of the Kelton stop, I have been contacted by many residents.

Dormont is a booming walking community which utilizes public transit options, and the elimination of this stop is of great concern to me and to my constituents. That is why I thought it was important and appropriate for me to contact the Port Authority of Allegheny County about my concerns.

As I relayed to the Authority, I realize the budgetary matters that have plagued the Authority for several years. I also realize that ridership numbers are a driving force for a system struggling to pay the bills. I do believe, however, that total elimination of stops on the T-Line will have a tremendous impact on a community that impacts not just the riders of the T-line but the businesses near that line, and that the bigger picture of community impact must be considered when the need to modify service occurs.

I am, therefore, seeking consideration from the Authority to retain the Kelton T-stop in Dormont. Dormont officials as well as the residents and business owners have worked tremendously hard to promote the Dormont community as a walking community that has access to public transportation.

By eliminating T-Line service at Kelton, this image is jeopardized. By eliminating this service, this thriving community and the businesses that make it unique will be in jeopardy. I understand that there are neighboring stops that will remain but this stop is vital to the Potomac and West Liberty business community.

Make no mistake, I know that the Authority is struggling and I know that that it’s leadership has made some strides in getting the financial matters in order. I further understand that the Governor has vowed not to provide further revenue to the Authority and that service cuts are the only thing on the table at this point.

As the Allegheny County Delegation of the House of Representatives works in Harrisburg to try and help address the Port Authority’s funding issues, I simply asked that the Authority look to reduce rather than eliminate this stop and other stops on the system.

I will keep the residents of Dormont informed of any response I receive from the Authority. In the meantime, if I can be of service to any of my constituents in any state-related matter, please don’t hesitate to call my office at 412-928-9514.
