Liberty Bridge Renovation: $81 Million Project Finally Completed

Work on the span took 37 months to complete.

PITTSBURGH, PA - The delays, detours and closures are over. Three months after the project was supposed to be completed, the three-year, $81.8 million renovation of the Liberty Bridge is finished.

The rehabilitation, which began in August 2015, caused traffic headaches for motorists on virtually a daily basis. It included deck replacement and ramp reconstruction, structural steel repairs, painting of the entire structure, concrete repairs, signage improvements and installation of a new alternating overhead lane control system.

The project was delayed in September 2016 when the span caught fire and nearly collapsed. The bridge was closed for weeks, and federal investigators later found that bridge contractor Joseph B. Fay did not follow proper fire safety measures.

Although the bridge project has wrapped up, don’t think it will be smooth sailing for the 42,000 motorists who use the bridge each day. An ongoing renovation of the Liberty Tunnel isn’t expected to be completed until for another five months.
