Remembering 'Charlie,' Businessman Who Sold Flags and Formal Wear

Charles J. Thomas Jr. died on June 13.

Dormont residents are mourning the loss of former businessman Charles J. Thomas Jr., better known as Charlie.

Thomas owned Thomas Flag and Formals on West Liberty Avenue for nearly four decades before closing his business six years ago, according to the Post-Gazette.

The store rented tuxedos and sold flags.

Thomas, of Baldwin Township, died suddenly on June 13 at St. Clair Hospital. He was 85.

Thomas was an avid athlete at Dormont High School, which earned by 25 scholarship offers.

He chose to play track and football for the University of Pittsburgh, and became a lifelong supporter of the school.

Thomas served in the Navy from 1951 to 1955.

Beloved husband of the late Marjorie G. Thomas; devoted father of LuAnne (Joseph) Caldwell of Franklin, TN, Charles J. Thomas, III (Sarah) of Tampa, FL and the late Susan Lucas; brother of Phyllis McKenzie and Evelyn "Dolly" Burgess; loving grandfather of seven; and great-grandfather of four.
