PHILADELPHIA, PA — A local third-grader is dancing one of the key roles in George Balanchine's The Nutcracker, presented by the Philadelphia Ballet at the oldest opera house in the United States.

Though Ethan Ross is only eight, he said in a profile with the Central Bucks School District that he has been dancing since the age of five. The Nutcracker was the first ballet he ever saw, so when his mom told him about the opportunity to audition he jumped at the chance.

Ross is dancing the role of Fritz, Clara's pesky younger brother. Fritz breaks her nutcracker doll along with other antics at the opening Christmas party.

He told Central Bucks in his student spotlight that he's enjoyed performing in a professional show, though his schedule is packed with five days of rehearsals and two classes per week at the Metropolitan Ballet Academy in Jenkintown.

“It’s hard work, and even though I’m tired when I’m done, I have so much fun during class," he said.

He's especially enjoyed performing in a beautiful old theater with a big chandelier, and getting to be a part of a period piece like The Nutcracker.

“[The costumes] are interesting, since it’s set in the past,” he told Central Bucks. “My friend’s costume has 32 buttons!”

Many community members have commended Ross' dedication to his craft at such a young age.

"Great work, Ethan!" Senator Maria Collet wrote in a message. "Congratulations."

Ross danced the role of Fritz in all the shows this past weekend, and will also perform in shows on Dec. 27, Dec. 28, and Dec. 29.

Ticket prices and the full program for the show are available online.
