Cleanup Underway In Buckingham Twp. After Ida, Tornado Hit Area

Buckingham Township was in the path of an EF-1 tornado Wednesday night that downed wires and uprooted numerous trees.

BUCKINGHAM TOWNSHIP, PA — First responders and public works crews have been “working around the clock” since Wednesday night to rescue residents and clean up after the remnants of Ida brought high winds, heavy rain and a tornado to the township, officials said Friday.

Buckingham Township is working with local, county and state emergency management officials to manage the township’s recovery after the severe storm, according to a news release.

An EF-1 tornado formed just before 6 p.m. Wednesday near Neshaminy Creek in Doylestown and produced a "consistent path of damage" as it traveled 4.4 miles before lifting in Buckingham Township, the National Weather Service said Friday. The damage was "mainly confined to trees," with many snapped and uprooted along the tornado's path.

The heaviest damage was reported along a stretch of Edison-Furlong Road, where several utility poles were also snapped. That tornado was part of a storm cell that produced another strong tornado in Montgomery County about 20 minutes prior to touching down in Doylestown, the NWS said.

No injuries were reported from the tornado.

Buckingham Township officials on Friday lauded local police officers, firefighters, paramedics and public works employees for their ongoing efforts amid the storm and cleanup.

“We responded to medical emergencies, accidents, fire emergencies, downed power lines, homes damaged by falling trees, bridges washed out, roadways damaged, and all of the calls for service we handle on a normal day,” officials said.

“Our sincerest thanks to all of those who responded to the many calls for assistance over the past 3 days. This includes our responders as well as local residents who have lent a helping hand to their neighbors and our community,” they said.

Several township roads remained closed Friday as crews continue cleanup and recovery efforts, according to Buckingham Township police:

  • Route 202 — between Route 313 and Route 413
  • Route 313 — between Route 263 and Route 202
  • Edison-Furlong Road — between Route 263 and Pebble Hill Road
  • Mill Road — between Church School Road and Route 202
  • Lower Mountain Road — between Street Road and Holicong Road
  • Lower Mountain Road West (entire road)
