Membership in the VFW is reserved for those who have served honorably in a combat zone with the U.S. Armed Forces.

A core pillar of the VFW is Community Service, with a strong emphasis on public safety. Each year, the VFW takes time to honor and recognize individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the safety and well-being of the community. These awards highlight the courage and dedication of those who, much like wartime veterans, put the safety and lives of others above their own.

They recognize the heroic service of Firefighters, Emergency Medical Technicians, Law Enforcement Officers, 911 Dispatchers, and Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technicians — those who stand at the forefront of public safety.
