The Two Reasons You Constantly Slice The Golf Ball — and how to fix them…

Are you tired of watching your golf ball take a one-way trip to the right, disappearing into the trees or landing in an unplayable lie?

Do you dream of hitting powerful, penetrating drives that soar straight down the fairway? If you're an average golfer battling the dreaded slice, you know the frustration. It robs you of distance, accuracy, and, most importantly, the joy of a well-struck shot.

But what if I told you that conquering your slice isn't some mythical quest reserved for touring pros? What if a few simple, actionable changes could unlock a whole new level of performance and enjoyment on the course?

The truth is, the slice is a solvable mystery, and like many challenges in golf, its roots often lie in surprisingly fundamental areas. Recently, I sat down with Daniel Guest, a Top 100 Golf Coach and founder of Imagen Golf, who revealed the two biggest culprits behind this ball-flight nightmare – and, more importantly, how you can fix them for good.

The Slice: Unmasking Your Swing's Hidden Saboteurs

At its core, a slice is born from a common coupling: an out-to-in swing path meeting an open clubface at impact. When these two elements collide, your ball is destined for a date with the right side of the course, devoid of power and precision. The question, then, isn't what causes it, but why so many golfers find themselves in this predicament.

Here are the two game-changing insights from Coach Guest:

Reason No. 1: Your Setup is Selling You Short

It sounds almost too simple, doesn't it? But as we consistently preach, a solid setup is the bedrock of consistent ball striking. And nowhere is this more evident than in the fight against the slice.

Think about a PGA Tour pro at address. Their hips and shoulders are perfectly aligned, square to the target. Now, picture the typical chronic slicer. You'll often see their hips and shoulders drastically open, pointing significantly to the left of the target.

As Coach Guest explains, "Essentially, they’re pointing their chest more toward the target and aligning everything too far left. That setup will certainly encourage a swing path that’s more out-to-in."

This is golf's cruel irony: You slice it right, so you aim left, hoping to compensate. But by opening your stance, you're only making the underlying problem worse, forcing your club to swing across the ball and perpetuating the slice.

The Fix: Reset Your Foundation, Reshape Your Flight!

This is where you take back control. The next time you're on the range, grab an alignment stick or an extra club and lay it on the ground, pointing directly at your target. Now, here's the crucial part: align your feet, hips, and shoulders so they are perfectly parallel to that stick.

It will feel wildly counter-intuitive at first. You'll likely feel like you're aiming miles to the right, but trust the process! In reality, you'll be perfectly square to your target. By making this fundamental adjustment to your setup, you'll naturally encourage a more neutral, on-plane swing path, setting the stage for straighter, more powerful shots.

Reason No. 2: The Downswing Dilemma – Timing is Everything!

Once you reach the pinnacle of your backswing, there's an undeniable urge to unleash all your power, to "go after it." But here's a secret: Rushing your transition isn't just limiting your clubhead speed; it's actively contributing to your slice.

Consider how the best players in the world initiate their downswing. From the top of the swing until their lead arm is parallel to the ground, they make a subtle but powerful move: they shift their hips approximately two inches toward the target. This seemingly small movement is a game-changer because it keeps their shoulders "closed" – or facing away from the target – longer during the downswing.

"That forward movement helps keep the torso closed longer and keeps the club more behind the body," Guest clarifies. "What many poor players do instead is open up their body too early and shift their hips away from the target. That causes the hands and club to move out and away from the body, steepening the swing path."

When your hands and club get "outside" your body on the downswing, the club has only one way to go through impact: across the ball. This out-to-in path forces you to leave the clubface open just to prevent a wild hook, creating the perfect recipe for a slice.

The Fix: Feel the Coil, Unleash the Power!

This isn't about slowing down; it's about sequencing. When you transition from the top of your swing, focus on a distinct feeling of keeping your shoulders "closed" just a touch longer before you aggressively uncoil. Visualize your hips initiating the downswing, followed by your torso and then your arms and club.

This sensation will help your club stay "behind" your body a bit longer on the downswing, promoting a crucial in-to-out swing path. This is the pathway to power, allowing you to deliver the club squarely to the ball with maximum energy and a piercing trajectory.

The slice has held too many golfers hostage for too long. But with these clear insights and actionable drills, you have the power to break free. Embrace the challenge, commit to these changes on the range, and watch as your ball flight transforms from a frustrating curve to a confident, powerful strike.
