BUCKS COUNTY, PA — Bucks County is bracing to move into the green phase of coronavirus mitigation this Friday. The county has been in the yellow phase of mitigation since June 5. Prior to that, it was in the red phase and under a stay-at-home order.

While the level of new cases has indeed slowed since the peak in April, Bucks County is still reporting multiple new cases daily. On Tuesday, 29 new cases of the coronavirus were reported by Bucks County health officials. That's a small bump upward after days of new case counts being in the teens.

The county has reported more than 5,200 cases of the virus since it first arrived locally on March 10. There have been 503 deaths. About 80 percent of COVID-19 deaths in Bucks County have occurred among nursing home residents, according to state data.

Across Pennsylvania, there have been a total of 83,191 cases and 6,515 deaths. Of the state's deaths, 4,467 have occurred among residents of nursing homes and long-term care facilities.

The United States has the most infections and deaths by far in the world, with more than 2.3 million cases and 121,600-plus confirmed virus-related deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University.

There are now about 30,000 new COVID-19 cases reported per day in the United States. The number of new cases had leveled off at about 20,000 and stayed there for weeks before rising over the weekend.

Testifying before a House panel on Tuesday, Dr. Anthony Fauci, one of the nation's top infectious disease experts, called the new upward trend in cases "disturbing."

The developments come as Pennsylvania braces to move all counties into the least-restrictive phase of mitigation. Face coverings will still be required in public, the governor has said.
