Past and Present Come Together for Easton Heritage Day
Easton celebrates its annual late Independence Day.
It's been more than 200 years since the British monarchy held any power over folks in Easton.Â
But every year on Heritage Day, twenty-first century Eastonians are more than happy to gather in Centre Square like it's July 1776 and boo King George III.
Sunday's Heritage Day was no different, with hundreds of people listening to re-enactor Chris Black read the Declaration of Independence, capturing a real-life moment from 1776. (Easton was one of three cities—Philadelphia and Trenton were the other two—where the Declaration read in public.)
There were moments when 1776 and 2013 seemed to collide, with re-enactors getting photos on their cellphones and (in one case) riding a Segway.Â
The day's festivities were expected to move to the waterfront at 4:30 p.m., with fireworks happening Sunday night at 9:30.
