'Unusual' Mudslide Reported at Chrin Landfill

If you were driving along Interstate 78 Wednesday, you might have noticed something different about the Chrin Brothers Sanitary Landfill: a large zig-zagging slash down the face of the landfill, as if a giant hand had reached down and scooped out a piece.

Apparently it was the work of a mudslide at the site that spread over at least eight acres and unearthed liquified garbage dating back to the last decade, the Morning Call reports.

The DEP's Colleen Connolly told the paper the landslide was "very unsual" for a landfill, and that it could take weeks to figure out what happened.

The landfill remained open during the day Wednesday, as Chrin worked to repair the damage. The Express-Times notes that the DEP says there's no environmental danger, although the state is concerned about the stability of other areas of the landfill.
