Allegheny Alligator: Police Confirm Gator Sighting in Cheswick

Police are consulting Pittsburgh Zoo among others to figure out what to do about the alligator. It was last seen in Cheswick.

Cheswick Police received a report of an alligator on the Allegheny River Shoreline. Dan Gerhard, who owns a dock upriver from the Cheswick Marina, reported seeing alligator tracks on Thursday.

“There’s a gator running around here. It could be somebody’s pet gator, I’m assuming,” Gerhard told Trib Total Media.

He also reported seeing “two eyeballs” in the river, and saw its mouth open about 8 inches wide.

Police Chief Robert Scott says that Gerhard’s report is credible, and attempted to contact the Pittsburgh Zoo, PPG Aquarium, state Game Commission, and Fish and Boat Commission to find out how to approach the situation.

Gerhard’s report follows last month’s alligator sightings in Indiana Township. Police don’t know whether this is the same alligator.
