Senior Center Extends Hours During Heat Wave

A Squirrel Hill senior center runs on extended hours this week.

Because of the continuing heat, a senior center in Squirrel Hill will remain open beyond its usual hours of operation this week, according to a press release from the Allegheny County Department of Human Services.

The Jewish Community Center in Squirrel Hill will stay open from 7:30 a.m. until 9:30 p.m. from Monday through Thursday. On Friday, it will open at 7:30 a.m. and close at 6 p.m..

All county residents who are 60 or older can visit any of the county-funded senior centers to socialize and enjoy activities while taking refuge from the heat. The list of senior centers with extended hours of operation may be updated as the duration of the current heat wave dictates.

Local centers operating on regular hours this week include the Braddock Hills Senior Center and the Forest Hills Senior Center, both remaining open from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m., as well as the Swissvale Senior Center, which will be open from 8:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m.

Visit Allegheny County’s website for a complete list of senior centers, and also check out some tips for keeping cool.
