Woodland Hills Grad Has Lifetime of Perfect Attendance

Edgewood's Shane Mysels never missed a day from kindergarten to his senior year of high school.

Taking his vitamins and eating his vegetables paid off for Shane Mysels.

During his time as a student in the , he never missed a day.

“It feels good knowing I accomplished it because not many people have done that,” Mysels said. “It was just a daily routine.”

Mysels, 18, of Edgewood, currently works for the department of public works for . He graduated from in June and is headed for Robert Morris University this fall. He said hopefully, his previous track record at school will roll over into his college experience.

“Some kids I know now are saying, ‘Word of advice - go to class,’” Mysels said.

And that’s definitely something that comes naturally to him.

Mysels’ mother, Judy, who works at , said her daughter, Mariah, has one year of school left and may follow in her brother’s perfect attendance footsteps. She also has not yet missed a day.

“I think it’s pretty cool but he doesn’t really think it’s a big deal,” she said. “I don’t feel the kids need to miss and they never said, ‘I don’t feel like going to school today.’ Both of our kids are like that.”

She said her children simply enjoy going to school - it’s that simple.

“I think they are dedicated and they like school,” Judy said. “I don’t think they are abnormally healthy, but we have also had no deaths in the family, so they never had to miss for those reasons, either.”

If her children ever got sick at night, they always felt better by morning to attend school the next day.

Mysels’ name was on the marquis at Woodland Hills High School in honor of his lifetime of perfect attendance thus far. While he remains humble, he thinks his history in the school district is a reflection of his character.

“I think it shows that you need dedication and hard work to be successful,” he said.
