73-Car Crash Shuts Down PA Interstate

Multiple people were injured in the accident that closed the interstate for several hours, Pennsylvania State Police said.

CUMBERLAND COUNTY, PA — Part of Route 581 in Cumberland County closed Saturday after a crash involving dozens of cars injured multiple people, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

The crash happened Saturday afternoon on eastbound 581 between exits 5 and 6B, Trooper Megan Ammerman said in a tweet.

At 4 p.m. ET, Ammerman said 73 vehicles were involved in the crash. Multiple people were hurt, though no life-threatening injuries were reported. Others involved in the crash were transported by bus to the New Cumberland Borough Fire Department, police said.

All lanes of Hwy. 581 were closed Saturday afternoon as authorities worked to clear the crash. Residents were asked to avoid the area.
