Hundreds of folks in need, all from the York community, lined up at Union Lutheran Church on November 11, 2023, to receive free coats, preparing them for the cold winter ahead. Through an act of community giving, the "Bundle Up with Love" event, led by Coats of Friendship, handed out thousands of coats and cold-weather gear like hats, gloves, and scarves, ensuring residents are prepared for the cold.
The annual distribution, led by Coats of Friendship, a non-profit dedicated to warming the community “one coat at a time,” coincided with World Kindness Day and more than 2,200 coats in all sizes were handed out to children, women, and men in need. Only 50 coats left when the event concluded, highlighting the event's success and reach.

Local business UNITS of York Moving and Portable Storage provides essential logistical support to the non-profit by donating two large storage containers that are used to collect, store, and transport the donations collected throughout the year.
J.R. Kitchell, owner of UNITS of York, reflected on the collaboration, “Taking part in a community effort where people support each other and take care of each other is incredibly rewarding. It's a testament to what we can accomplish together, and I'm proud that UNITS could contribute to such a significant cause.”
Local teen Tristan Rankin, the founder of Coats of Friendship, praised the partnership, stating, “Without the support from J.R. and UNITS, this event wouldn't have been possible. They're the backbone of our operation, helping us deliver warmth throughout York.”
York Community Rallies to Provide Warmth for Winter
The initiative's mission, “Make the World a Little Bit Warmer One Coat at a Time,” was lived out in full force, with the impact extending beyond tangible items. It was about more than just the coats; it was about the spirit of giving, the community's strength, and the culture of care that defines the region.
As volunteers handed out coats, the scene was one of pure connection, with smiles exchanged and stories shared; and an overwhelming feeling of community. "It really was a special moment seeing the generosity of people come to life. With every coat we gave to someone in need came a hug, and a thank you," Rankin added.
As Coats of Friendship looks ahead, they continue to accept donations all year round, ensuring no one in York County has to face the winter unprepared. This collaboration with UNITS of York is a powerful example of how local businesses and charitable efforts can come together, creating a lasting impact — one that goes beyond just the seasonal need and truly making a difference one coat, one hat, one life at a time.
