"The 8-team tournament (Haverford will have a team entered) is for 6th grade and under wrestlers to honor Lt. Col. Mark P. Phelan who made the ultimate sacrifice in Mosul, Iraq in October 2004 when an IED detonated near his convoy vehicle. Shortly before his death, Mark (a 1979 Upper Darby High graduate) wrote to his wife Brenda and asked that if he did not make it home that a scholarship be set up in his name to be awarded to a wrestler at Upper Darby High School who displayed the most dedication and enthusiasm to the sport, not necessarily to the best wrestler. The proceeds from this tournament support the scholarship."
