Izett's Has Been Making Custom Golf Clubs For 50 Years

Read about the longtime Haverford Township business.

For 50 years, the name "Izett" has been synonymous with golf clubs.

Located on Haverford Road in the Ardmore section of Haverford Township, Izett Golf does custom fitting and building of golf clubs. Its long history as a family-owned business brings customers from as far as Northern New Jersey and Baltimore.

Co-owner George Izett's father, a golf pro from Scotland, started the business in 1941 after Wannamaker's wholesale golf division closed. The business moved to its Haverford Road location in 1946. His reputation of working with wooden woods allowed him to go toe-to-toe with the big named club-makers.

In 1999, co-owner Michael Morrison took a what was then a planned short-term sabbatical from his job in finance to repair golf clubs. He's been there ever since and in 2002 became a partner in the business.

In custom building golf clubs, it's all about the fit. And Morrison said that they do it differently from everyone else. This year they were listed by Golf Digest as one of America's 100 Best Clubfitters.

Word of mouth recommendations are strong for them, Morrison said. When golfers see their friends suddenly playing much better, and they say "I went to Izett's," they often end up seeing more of their friends.

Although the recent U.S. Open was just down the road at Merion Golf Club, Morrison said that everything was very quiet at the shop. He was able to watch the practice rounds of the tournament on Monday and Tuesday, which he said he preferred to watching the actual play. They did get a visit from German professional golfer Marcel Siem, who stopped in to get his putter fixed.
