USGA 'Building a City' for U.S. Open in Haverford
As the tournament draws near so does a complete transformation.

If you have not driven by the Merion Golf Club recently as it prepares to host the 2013 U.S. Open in June, you should. It's a sight to see on Golf House Road.
From groups of tents to porta-potties sitting on the lawns of stately homes, the immediate neighborhood is being turned upside-down for the event.
"They're building a city," Haverford Township's deputy police chief, John Viola, is quoted as saying on Philly.com.

Rick Ill, chairman of the U.S. Open for the club, said the infrastructure on and around the course has "exponentially grown up overnight."

"There are grandstands in spaces I didn't think they could fit anything," he said.
Neighbors have noticed the increased din of construction recently, including chiseling jackhammers, humming generators, and whizzing saws that echo for hours every day.
"There's noise at 5:30, 6 a.m.," said Suzanne Goodwin, a Golf House Road resident. "Trucks, workmen, going bang, bang, bang."
