Letter to the Editor: Flag Protocol Should Be Followed
Former U.S. Marine John Kowalenko says he was disappointed not to see U.S. flag protocol followed on Memorial Day.
To the editor:
As a former Marine, I was proud to see the . HOWEVER, I was also disappointed to see that our , and did not have their flags flying according to flag protocol for Memorial Day.
The flag is to be flown at half staff from 8am to noon at which point the colors are returned to the top of the flag pole to complete the day. I also noticed this last year and had forgotten about it until yesterday. While it is awesome that people like to display the flag, they also need to know that there is a protocol and should do their best to do a little research to make sure they are showing the proper respect. The fact that the three entities in particular that I mentioned failed to do what is proper is disturbing because they are some of the most visible flags in town.

I don't care if it is a volunteer service or not, someone needs to make sure those colors are properly displayed according to the U.S. Flag Code, § 6. Time and Occasions for Display.
You may want to remind everyone that the next time the flag flies at half staff is on for Patriots Day.
