Township Trail Opened with Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony

A new connector trail between Polk Valley Park and the Saucon Valley School District campus will improve pedestrian access along the Polk Valley Road corridor in Lower Saucon Township.

Students and staff from the and Hellertown residents will have an easier time reaching Lower Saucon's , thanks to that was officially opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony April 20.

The paved, winding trail parallels Polk Valley Road and includes a picturesque pedestrian bridge that spans Polk Valley Run.

"It's...a symbol of the unity between the school district, and ," Lower Saucon Township Parks and Recreation Committee chairman Dave Spirk said at the ceremony.

"It's just another symbol of what can be done when we work together," he added.

The 1,000-foot-long trail has been planned since the relatively new Polk Valley Park was just an idea.

It's hoped that its opening will encourage more local residents to walk to the popular hillside park that includes both  and , Spirk said.

"These connections--they're really important in terms of having a healthy community," he commented.

"Eventually we hope to connect (the trail) down Polk Valley Road and across (Route 412)," where it would link up with the , Lower Saucon Township Manager Jack Cahalan noted.

Also in attendance at the ribbon-cutting ceremony were state Rep. Bob Freeman (D-136), Lower Saucon Township council members Priscilla deLeon and Ron Horiszny, Hellertown Borough councilman Tom Rieger and Assistant Township Manager Leslie Huhn.
