Gamburg's Owner Mourned In Hatboro

Sidney Gamburg was a mainstay in Hatboro, serving on numerous boards. He died on Wednesday.

HATBORO, PA —The owner of Gamburg's Furniture, a beacon of the borough for nearly 100 years before closing last year, has died.

Sidney Malcom Gamburg, the furniture store's long-time business owner, died Wednesday in his home in Lafayette Hill, according to his obituary.

"The borough is saddened to learn of the passing of long-time businessman Sid Gamburg," the borough posted on Facebook. "Thank you to Sid for all you did for Hatboro. Please join us in keeping his family in your thoughts during this difficult time."

Gamburg was born in 1936 in Philadelphia to Jeanne and Louis Gamburg and later moved to Hatboro.

He was a graduate of Muhlenberg College in 1958. Following his time at Muhlenberg, Gamburg was a pharmacist in the U.S. Army from 1960 to 1962.

Gamburg joined the family business, Gamburg Furniture, a four-generation family business in Hatboro in 1962.

He became a mainstay in the Hatboro community and served as a board member of Hatboro Federal Savings for 38 years.

In 1997, Gamburg was inducted into the Hatboro High Hall of Fame. He was recognized as Hatboro’s Honored Citizen for Service to Business in 2003 as well as “Retailer of the Year” by the Home Furnishing Association.

Gamburg was an avid golfer. He spent his free time at Meadowlands Country Club, where he met his wife and love of his life, Joyce (Fogel), and the two married in 1963.

He is survived by his three sons, Michael, Jeffrey (Michele), and Donald (Amy). He took much joy in his five grandchildren, Madeline, Louis, Anna, Katelyn, and Jayne.

Relatives and friends are invited to services on Friday at 11 a.m. at the Joseph Levine and Sons Memorial Chapel, 4737 Street Rd. in Trevose. The interment is at Roosevelt Memorial Park.

The Gamburg's furniture property future is still up in the air.

Gamburg's was a beacon in the borough for nearly 100 years.

Last August, Gamburg's owners sent a letter to priority customers announcing they were closing the business after 94 years in the downtown business district and retiring.

But after permanently shutting its doors last November, the windows that once showcased furniture are now all boarded up and the property's development is unknown, officials said at Monday's Borough Council meeting.
