"He fought tirelessly to assist any veteran with paperwork, needs, home repairs, and an ear to listen, etc. A veteran himself, Walt believed veterans deserved more, and he fought for them any way he could," VFW Post 9788 stated. "With his leadership and determination to energize the posts of the district, District 16 earned All-American honors for two straight years. His passing will be felt by many, but none more than the veterans he served."
Post 9788 was directly impacted by Hartnett's efforts to ensure all veterans have a place to call their own.

When the doors of Post 9788 closed six years ago, Hartnett rallied for local veterans to step up and help get the doors back open.
"He would not accept without a fight that the VFW Post in Horsham would be lost for veterans in the community," VFW Post 9788 said. "He was there to support our reopening, cheered us on when the Post earned All-State and All-American, and he attended and spoke at our 75th anniversary celebration."
Hartnett was proud of the work the township's veterans put into Post 9788, all while overseeing his own Post 1074 and the needs of District 16.
"He supported our veterans always and was at our post for a personal family event just a month ago," VFW Post 9788 said. "Today is a sad day. Hug your loved ones, tell your kids you love them, and reach out to a veteran to check in."
