Fall & Winter are quickly approaching causing changes in the weather such as cold temperatures, rain, and snow. While weather itself doesn’t cause chronic conditions, the adjustment in the air pressure can cause inflamed tissues to hurt more. This is a common complaint from those coping with pain from Arthritis.
It is important to recognize what the condition of Arthritis truly is to better understand how to cope with the pain, and how you can work on slight life modifications to better help prevent and manage symptoms.

What is Arthritis?
Arthritis occurs when there is inflammation in a joint area. This can affect one or multiple joints and can be different types based on how and where the inflammation occurs. Symptoms often include swelling of the area, reduced range of motion, pain and more. Each type of arthritis may cause variations in the symptoms you feel, and may need different treatments to help the area heal or provide relief. Below are a few tips to help manage general arthritis pain.

4 Tips to Help Manage Arthritis Pain:
1. Keep Moving
When pain is felt in an area, many people feel that they shouldn’t move or exercise as it could make the damage worse. For many chronic conditions, such as arthritis, this is not the case. Keeping yourself moving can actually help to avoid stiffness of the area(s) and may help alleviate some of the pressure in the area of pain. This is important in order to keep yourself mobile and avoid letting the inflammation take over.
2. Reduce Stress - both emotionally and physically
Stress is normally a large factor in any chronic condition, and in terms of arthritis it can cause your brain to send signals throughout the body which in turn may make your pain feel worse. Allowing yourself to engage in stress-relieving activities such as mediation, listening to music, resting, etc. or whatever helps you decompress to relieve some of this internal tension can help the area(s) feel better. In addition, avoiding things that may put stress on the joints that are causing you pain can help reduce aggravation of the area(s). This would include avoiding high-impact exercise or activities that would put a lot of stress or strain on the area(s) of pain.
3. Utilize your Strength
Many people assume that because they have pain in various areas, they no longer have the strength they need. This is not true and often leads to a life with lack of movement and mobility. While you may experience pain in certain areas, you have other areas that are unaffected and can provide you with the strength you need to carry out daily life. Instead of avoiding movements, you can modify them. For example, if you have pain in your hands and wrist, you can open a door using your arm or elbow to avoid putting extra stress on the wrist and using the strength from your much more stable arm. These types of adjustments can help you strengthen other areas of your body, but also help reduce your symptoms in the areas of pain.
4. Find Treatments that Help
Luckily, there are many options that may be able to help reduce pain and/or treat your arthritis. These options may include medication that can reduce inflammation or pain, massage therapy to help loosen up the areas of pain, CBD supplements or topicals to help reduce inflammation and increase mobility, various joint injections to provide internal pain relief and healing, and more!
These tips are all options that can help you live a better quality of life with Arthritis and treat the area(s) in order to help them heal. Remembering that you have outlets and the ability to help reduce your symptoms is important in any chronic condition and having a positive outlook on your condition in addition to properly understanding it can help you learn to adapt and grow in new ways.
