Driver 'Not Reckless' In Fatal April Crash In Lansdale

The driver was not speeding or behaving recklessly before striking and killing a 71-year-old woman crossing the street, police said.

LANSDALE, PA — The driver who struck and killed a woman walking in Lansdale in April will not face serious criminal charges, authorities announced after an extension investigation.

The incident, which occurred on April 24, took the life of 71-year-old Diane Kopena.

Kopena was crossing Columbia Avenue at Richardson Avenue when she was struck. She was taken to the hospital and died from her injuries several days later.

Lansdale police and the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office determined that the driver did nothing reckless and that speed was not a factor in the crash.

The driver also stayed on the scene, provided first aid to Kopena, and called for help, officials said.

"We recognize the profound grief that accompanies such a sudden and devastating loss, and our thoughts remain with those mourning during this incredibly difficult time," police said.

The driver still does face lesser charges, including right of way of pedestrians in crosswalks, turning movements and required signals and required position, and method of turning.
