As of Wednesday morning, Dennin had 48,011 votes and Pennycuick had 47,587 votes, according to unofficial results from the Pennsylvania Department of State's website.

From our earlier story:

Pennsylvania's 24th Senatorial District was a hotly contested race, since Republican incumbent State Sen. Bob Mensch is retiring.

The race was between Democratic candidate Jill Dennin and Republican candidate Tracy Pennycuick, who served as a state representative but gave up her seat to run for the senate position.

Dennin was a former school board member in Berks County.

More information about each of the candidates can be found in the above links.

The newly drawn 24th Senatorial District includes parts of Berks and Montgomery Counties, including Amity Township, Longswamp,Red Hill, Pennsburg East Greenville, Boyertown, Colebrookdale, Earl, Douglass Berks, Douglass Montgomery, Pottstown, the Pottsgroves, Upper and Lower Frederick, Upper and Lower Salford, Skippack, Collegeville, Limerick, Upper Gwynedd, North Wales, and Towamencin.

Election returns are expected to start coming in for this and other state and federal races throughout the night on Tuesday following the closure of polls, but even unofficial results are not anticipated to be ready by night's end due to a laborious process to count mail-in ballots since Pennsylvania recently greatly expanded mail-in voting.

While many results likely won't be ready by Tuesday evening in Pennsylvania, in the coming days Patch will bring you up to date information about the results in state and local election races.

Disclaimer: All election results reported on Tuesday night are unofficial and totals may change. State election officials say it could take days for actual, official results to be tallied, due to things like mail-in voting. And it then takes 20 days after the election for Pennsylvania to certify its results.
