James Beard Finalist Chef Opens 2nd New Eatery In Montgomery Co.

COLMAR, PA — A James Beard finalist chef has opened his second new restaurant in Montgomery County this month, featuring some of his family's ancient recipes.

Mama Chang, located on 118 Bethlehem Pike in Colmar, it the second Montgomery County restaurant for Chang, a legendary Chinese chef widely known in the culinary world.

Chang also recently opened Peter Chang King of Prussia in the Henderson Square Shopping Center, reflecting his unique interest in the Philly region.

"The menu spotlights home-style Hunan, Hubei, and Sichuan dishes that have been passed down for generations by the matriarchs of the Chang family," a spokesperson for the restaurant told Patch.

The 9,700 square foot restaurant can seat up to 280 guests across two large dining rooms, and also features a private event space.

It's named for the "female influences in Chang's life," the restaurant said, including Chang's 84-year-old mother, his wife, and his daughter.

A ribbon cutting for Mama Chang was held on Friday, Oct. 10, and a party that followed served as a fundraiser for Manna on Main.

Chang, a native of Wuhan, China, first came to the U.S. as the chef for the Chinese ambassador to the United States some three decades ago.

Since then, his eateries have developed a large global following and he is widely considered in culinary circles as one of the greatest Chinese chefs in America.
