It’s no secret that intense injuries and chronic conditions can take a serious toll on our bodies, but how can we be sure that the wear and tear is fully healed and as strong as it once was? For many coping with serious pain from a past injury or chronic condition, the road to healing may seem endless and it can be difficult to rebuild the internal strength and healing mechanism that your body once had. Thankfully, there are modern therapies that can help rebuild and repair those areas - these are known as regenerative therapies or regenerative medicine.

What is regenerative medicine?

Regenerative medicine/therapies are new medical technologies that focus on the functional restoration of tissues or organs that have been damaged by chronic conditions or injuries. These are an alternative to conventional therapies and are typically performed when the conventional therapies fail for the given condition.

The two therapies that are now available and in use by select providers are Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) and Stem Cell (SC) Therapies. These names can sound intimidating and unfamiliar to many patients seeking help, but they can be very helpful for patients to understand and use to essentially ‘start over’ or ‘rebuild’ their bodies from the damage that was done.

What is PRP Therapy?

This regenerative technology utilizes injections of a patient’s own platelets (part of your blood that contains water and proteins) to stimulate growth and reparative cell production. This is done by taking a few tubes of blood from the patient, and using guided ultrasound imaging to perform the injection.

To break it down, the therapy process is essentially taking your own blood and injecting it into the area in need of repair to stimulate the regrowth/rebuilding of cells in that area. This not only helps accelerate your body’s healing process, but also can help increase overall functionality of the area/condition.

What is Stem Cell Therapy?

Similar to PRP, stem cell therapy also promotes the repair of tissues - whether they are diseased, injured, or dysfunctional. Stem cells are the cells in ‘raw form’, meaning that they have not become specialized cells for a particular purpose or area of the body. These raw cells are used by researchers/physicians to grow into specialized cells for the patient’s area of need. They are then injected into the area of need on the patient to repair the area.

What are the benefits of regenerative medicine?

So why would anyone want to choose these therapies over more conventional ones? To start, these therapies may help when conventional methods do not - giving patients an alternative option. In addition, these therapies utilize your own body means, so it is unlikely that your body will reject them. They also have little side effects, are non-invasive, and can help reduce the need for other medications such as anti-inflammatories and other pain medications.

Who is regenerative medicine for?

Many ailments, chronic conditions, and injuries can benefit from regenerative therapies - making the option available to a wide variety of patients or athletes. Given the safety level of the treatments, really anyone who has a need may benefit from these options.

If pain and dysfunction are keeping you from living the life you want, ask if a regenerative therapy may be right for you. The body’s ability to heal itself from within is an incredible thing, and these therapies can help perform just that.
