NORTH WALES, PA — Restaurant patrons who recently visited a local chain eatery say their meal receipt had an incorrect calculation in a section for suggested gratuity amounts.

The restaurant says it was all a misunderstanding.

"I ate at the Bonefish Grill and realized at the bottom of the receipt is a tip suggestions, all missed calculated. The 20% really was 25% and so on. DO YOUR OWN MATH. You can't trust no one," the user, identified only as "kc," wrote in the community post on Patch.

The receipt shows a meal amount of $82.09. Under the amount is a "tip guide" that shows suggested gratuities for 15 percent, 18 percent and 20 percent.

Under 20 percent, the restaurant calculated a tip of $19.80, but the user pointed out that a 20 percent tip for that meal total cost should actually be $16.40.

The community contributed post generated numerous views and comments.

Patch reached out to the restaurant, and here's the response we got.

Nicholas Gross, manager at the Bonefish Grill, explained that the customer had certain "comps" after the check was totaled. One was for liquor, and another was designated as "P.R."

Gross said the latter could have been anything from a coupon to some sort of voucher for an appetizer, etc.

Essentially, Gross said, those suggested tip amounts were calculated based on the total cost of the meal before any comps, or coupons, breaks, etc., were offered, hence the reason for the slight discrepancy.

Gross said he did not receive any complaints about the matter directly but did have an employee point it out to him on social media.

So, when a Patch reporter contacted him, he knew exactly the receipt in question, and referenced it while speaking with us.
