Bucks County Will Spray Mosquitoes In Bristol Borough Tuesday

The health department will treat residential areas and parks, aiming to combat high mosquito populations and offset risk of disease.

LEVITTOWN, PA — The Bucks County Mosquito Control Program will conduct an ultra-low volume mosquito control operation in Bristol Borough on Tuesday.

Called a ULV operation, this spraying aims to reduce high populations of both nuisance mosquitoes and mosquitoes capable of transmitting West Nile virus. The treatment will be administered via truck-mounted equipment, spraying mosquito habitats in residential and park locations.

Trucks are identified with Bucks County seal logos on their doors, officials said.

The equipment dispenses a pesticide called Biomist 3+15 at a rate of .75 ounces per acre. The spray provides quick, effective control of adult mosquito populations, with a low toxicity profile to mammals. The county says the spray will have negligible impact to non-target insects and the environment.

Certain mosquito species carry the West Nile virus, which can cause humans to contract West Nile encephalitis — an infection that can result in an inflammation of the brain. According to the Pennsylvania Department of Health, all residents in areas where virus activity has been identified are at risk of contracting West Nile encephalitis.

Weather conditions and other unexpected events could delay or cancel this spray operation. Wednesday evening is the back-up spray date.

County officials have not yet said where they plan to spray in the borough Tuesday.
