Falls Supervisors Say 'Yes' to Wawa Plan, Vote For New Ordinances

One ordinance amendment would prohibit the release of balloons and luminaries in township parks. The ordinance would also prohibit wading.

FALLS TOWNSHIP, PA — At Monday night's Board of Supervisors meeting, Falls Township supervisors advanced plans for a Wawa in the Lincoln Highway shopping center.

The board voted to grant preliminary and final land development approval for a 5,585-square-foot Wawa, with a store and eight fueling stations. The Wawa will take the place of Arosso, an Italian restaurant moving to a location inside the Lincoln Highway shopping center.

Last year, the board voted in favor of a conditional use approval to permit gas pumps at the location, modifying the restrictions at the Arleans Avenue and Lincoln Highway intersection from shopping center to highway commercial zoning. This change allows for the demolition of Arosso, to be replaced with the Wawa.

Plans are also underway for a six-foot sidewalk along Lincoln Highway.

Also on Monday, the board voted unanimously to adopt new ordinances which township attorney Lauren Gallagher says will bring the town in line with advisement by the Pennsylvania Game Commission.

The ordinance, proposed at a previous meeting, prohibits the release of helium balloons and luminaries. Parks and Recreation Director Brian Andrews said that families sometimes release balloons in memoriam of a loved one.

But released balloons contribute to litter and pollution, and have been known to kill wildlife who mistake ribbons and balloons for food. Sea turtles, dolphins, whales, fish, and birds have been found to have balloons in their stomachs, and other animals can become tangled in the strings.

Additionally, wading in the parks will be prohibited along with previous restrictions against swimming. Officials said these ordinances would be enforced in all Falls Township parks.

The meeting is available to watch online on the township website.
