St. Mary Gets 'A' Safety Grade
Only 33 percent of the hospitals in the U.S. graded by the nonprofit group earned an 'A' rating.

LANGHORNE, PA — The nonprofit Leapfrog Group, which assesses hospital safety, released its Fall 2019 safety ratings Thursday and St. Mary Medical Center, in Langhorne, did well.
St. Mary received an 'A' safety rating from the group.
Of the more than 2,600 hospitals graded in the country — including 123 in Pennsylvania — only 33 percent earned an A grade. That was a 1 percent increase from the last round of safety grades, released in Spring 2019.

"At St. Mary Medical Center, our patients’ safety is of the utmost importance," said St. Marys President Lawrence Brilliant. "We are proud to be recognized for our commitment to providing our community a safe and welcoming environment for healing. This acknowledgement underscores St. Mary’s mission providing quality, compassionate care to the whole person."
The grade was an improvement for St. Mary, which earned a 'C' on the Leapfrog Group's last assessment in the spring. The Langhorne hospital also earned a 'C' in fall 2018 and an 'A' in spring of last year.

In Pennsylvania, 56 hospitals got an A grade and eight got a D.
Grades range from A to D. The Leapfrog Group explains that its rating system is focused entirely on errors, accidents, injuries and infections. The hospital safety grades are released by the nonprofit group twice a year, in the spring and in the fall.
The group relies on a panel of experts to select the measures used in the methodology and to develop a scoring system. (You can read more about the letter grades here.)
